Class Outing at SHOCKyan's House

We will be having a class outing this Saturday, 9th January. The venue will be my house. Please come!

Activities:
I have a Wii console, with games like:
Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party (best party game ever!)
Mario Karts
Wii Sports
FIFA 10
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

If you prefer other activities, I have mahjong, and other board games like Risk, Cluedo, Monopoly, Dominoes, blah blah.

After all the games we can go to the very famous Jalan Kayu Roti Prata shop for dinner. Its just a 10-minute walk away.

Getting there:
As getting to my house may not be the easiest thing to do, I will wait at Yio Chu Kang MRT at 2pm on that day, to bring you to my house.

But anyway, you can take bus number 70 from Yio Chu Kang Bus Interchange right below the MRT, and alight at Opp Dedap Road stop, shown with the "Walk" sign on the map below. Yeah, then walk a very short distance in to 18 Dedap Link.

Dear All,

My name is Delwin Singh and I am a member of the Rotaract Club of Singapore. As part of our professional development and fund raising
efforts, we are holding an interview workshop for applicants interested in NUS Medicine, Dentistry, Law.

We noticed that there is a dearth of such programs as most existing information sessions only deal with the very basics on applying and reveal little about what you will be experiencing as you go through the process of sitting for essay tests and interviews. This is where we come in. We have invited interviewers from NUS Dentistry and Law to give an informal sharing session regarding the interview process. These interviewers would give their personal feel on the process and what they look out for. Due to the similarity between the Medicine and Dentistry process, the Dentistry interviewer will be covering the details for both courses. After that sharing session, we will be having current students in all three faculties to provide the less-politically-correct-but-yet-very-important things to watch out for during interviews.

We will be holding this event on the 6th of December 2008 from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. The venue for the workshop is TP4A at the Faculty of Dentistry (4th floor). During the tea break, you will be free to mingle with the professors to see how much information you can squeeze from them. The admission fee will be $15 dollars and all proceeds from this event will go towards Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore.. Hello guys. I have bad news. My dad did not manage to book the chalet so now I am booking Costa Sands Downtown East 24nov-28nov (4D3N) and the cost is $450/- so each person will have to pay $18. Is that okay with everyone? An alternative is a BBQ at my place and movie marathon. Really really sorry for all the delays and sudden changes... If you can't make it for the chalet or have any suggestions just sms me or tag. The website is closed for maintenance now but I will book the chalet first thing tmr morning.

Hello! For the class chalet booking right, the chalet we want to book is called Aloha Resorts.

We have quite a variety of choices and since there are so many resorts to choose from (which means many many available booking dates) I think it's better if I post the link on the class blog and you all see for yourselves. Remember the proposed class outing to De Coder's Cafe? There's even better news now. Qinny apparantly has (some large number) of vouchers which entitles us to free board games for 2 hours. Which means, we can have a totally free outing to De Coder's Cafe one day!

Yay.

But the voucher can only be used from Monday to Thursday, so we have to go there after school one day. So any suggestions for the date? The earliest we can go is 23rd July, which is when the choir people will be back.

Talking about the next class outing, I found an interesting voucher in the Change! goodie bag. It says:

De Coder's Cafe @ Balmoral Plaza is the latest board game cafe in town. It is centrally-located along Bukit Timah Road within the reach of Newton MRT station.

This voucher entitles you to:
- Free 2 hours of board gaming with no minimum charges
- Voucher can be used for up to a table of 4 persons
- This voucher can only be used during Monday to Thursday

I was thinking if we could go there as a class, some day after blocks, since it is so near our school. If enuff people are willing to use their vouchers, we could even have a completely free class outing. What do you think? Game for a few hours of board game fun?

BB boys doing business as usual, BB girls are comeback queens

“Man U completed the double today and this probably bodes well for this afternoon”, said Mr cheer IC. While Liying would do a better job at being a cheer IC than him, he could at least make a living as a prophet. Indeed, it was truly an afternoon to savor for Hwachong.

For the BB boys, it was yet another functional afternoon for them. Even during warm-up, they displayed their glittering array of skills, with star centre no.13 Lim Shengyu dunking 4 times in a row. The match was tight at the start, with opponents AJC making a game of it. With HCI’s no. 15 making good use of his thunderous biceps and no.4 making penetrating runs, there were plenty of players to watch. Most importantly, redsports favourite and esteemed member of the hottest band in town, SXML, Lim Shengyu gave an impressive all-round display to light up the court. Whenever he received the ball under the net, there could only be one conclusion. Fatigue never seemed to seep into the tireless centre, as he shrugged off an ankle injury and kept going. After the game, the MVP for two consecutive years modestly declared, "I didn't want to be MVP again, so i tried to pass the ball to my team mates." In the 4th quarter, HCI BB boys decided to assert their authority. The floodgates opened and they comfortably cemented victory. Simply unstoppable.

The BB girls’ match was more dramatic than anything mediacorp could produce. In the first 3 quarters, RJC used sneaky 3-pointer shots and a water tight defense to keep the HCI girls at bay. Their tactics worked to great effect and they managed to chalk up a seemingly unassailable lead of 44-28 points over HCI by the end of the 3rd quarter. Indeed, all seemed lost and this seemed to be RJC’s day. Nevertheless, the human spirit has proved time and again that impossible is nothing. Liverpool came back from a 3-0 deficit beat AC Milan in the exciting 2005 Champions League final. 300 Spartans held back the terrifying armies of hundreds of thousands of Persians. Today, this reporter was privileged to see HCI BB girls triumph over impossible odds. In the 4th quarter, with the raving lunatics in the HCI stands cheering themselves hoarse, the sheer passion of the HCI BB girls saw them take control of the game and send their points surging up. Finally, the HCI BB girls clawed their way to the slenderest lead in the dying seconds. As RJC poured men forward, the final thirty seconds seemed like eternity as our girls hung on desperately to endure a nerve-wrecking finish. Alas, the clock ticked zero, sending the HCI and RJC crowds into the very opposite spectrum of emotions. Heartbreak for RJC, all smiles for HCI. One awed Hwachongian, Liu Wen Qiang, gushed, “OMG that was sexciting!” Truly, that pretty much sums up this match.

Congrats to all Hwachongians and in particular, Huiting and Shengyu!

I've been watching the Sichuan earthquake reports on cabletv the whole night, and it's really quite sad. I started watching 凤凰中文电视台 when a lady was interviewing three teenage survivors (2 girls, 1 guy) from Wen Chuan, Bei Chuan and another earthquake area. They were being interviewed in Beijing. I shall attempt to remember bits and pieces of what they said and try to present it here, with extra bits of other info I read or watched somewhere else. I'll write in 3rd person.

The guy recounts what happened during the quake. His teacher immediately evacuated all the students, made sure everyone was rescued such as going back into the school building to the first floor to rescue someone before rushing to save her daughter, who was trapped under a collapsed building. That teacher dug through the rubble with her/his bare hands continuously through the night, and a team joined him/her when day came. Even when that team was replaced by another team and they still continued digging , they could not reach the girl. Throughout the digging, though, they could still hear the girl's voice. Then, they heard it no more. She had been buried alive and squashed to death.

There have been many cases of survivors making the tough decision to save others who can be more easily rescued instead of saving their loved one. There was a lady who was buried on the 3rd floor of a collapsed building, and she knew that her husband was buried even deeper below, the 1st floor. However, she knew that the machinery to remove the debris and rubble was not available yet, so she told the rescuers to leave her husband to save others, until the machinery came. The machinery took 5 days to come. I'm not too sure whether her husband came out alive or not. But I read in the newspapers today that there is a high risk of survivors dying even after they've been rescued from under the rubble.

Quote from The Sunday Times, World, pg 14:

" DANGER OF CRUSH SYNDROME

Washington - For people trapped under earthquake wreckage like in China, a successful rescue often marks the beginning - not the end- of the danger. Crushed muscle tissue can flood the bloodstream with toxic substances that can kill within a few hours. Even if a person avoids that problem, kidney failure caused by the toxins is often fatal within a few weeks. "Crush syndrome", the collective name for these problems, is second only to the trauma from falling debris as the cause of death in earthquakes. While the numbers vary, it is said that up to 10 per cent of people who make it to the hospital end up with acute renal failure from crush injuries. About half need dialysis to survive. The release of the damaging substance is the result of mechanical stretching of crushed muscles and the death of tissue because of insufficient blood. The damage often begins only when a survivor is extricated. Until then, the debris functions as a tourniquet, effectively isolating the pinned body part."

One of the girls being interviewed tries to recount what she saw after the quake. There were hands sticking out of the piles of rubble, sometimes legs, or just the head, or maybe the upper torso of the body. All of them were bloodied. For some, it was hard to discern how it looked like originally. There were hands all bloodied with the nails all gone as the survivors try to dig themselves out from the wreckage. There were faces unrecognisable, after being squashed and deformed by the heavy rubble piled on top of them. At this point, the interviewer told her to stop. She didn't want them to remember such terrible things anymore, and she herself (and she believed the audience too) could not bear to imagine the disastrous scene.

Another remembers how the parents would come to the school compounds to search for their children. She waited, and waited, watching all her other friends meeting up with their loved one, but her mother never came. All three of them had been orphaned due to this earthquake.

At the end of the interview, they stood together, presumingly to take a photo. Then one of the girls started choking up. To her, she felt really bad because the three of them are safe and talking happily in Beijing, while there were still many others still buried in Sichuan, and those poor people may not have had the chance to eat a biscuit, or to drink a sip of water for the past few days at all.

China, Hong Kong and Taiwan had a combined charity show at the same time tonight. Around 7-10. They showed the pictures, sang, interviewed soldiers and raised funds. Last time I saw, Taiwan raised about 1.864 billion, and Hong Kong around 8 billion. China's show interviewed two soldiers who came back from Sichuan. One guy recounted his experience in getting to Wenchuan. They took 31 hours to reach the epicenter of the quake in Wenchuan, and that was all by foot. They kept going despite the raining of the rocks, heavy rain, uneven ground (due to the quake) and even when there was no ground, they crossed probably slippery streams. The roads were blocked, the damage was evident from the crushed vehicles along the road and the damaged buildings. They were shivering from cold, they had to keep ducking from the falling stones and rocks due to the constant quakes that continued (uncountable), but they never stopped nor slowed down on their way to Wenchuan. Because they knew, every minute was precious to those people trapped under the rubble. And they were the first to get to Wenchuan, and release reports of the extent of the quake to the rest of the world. The other soldier 's hometown was Sichuan. Out of 36 family members, 29 were still missing in Beichuan. But he's not giving up due to grief, and determined to keep on doing his job, because to him, everybody was family.

Also, on 19 May, 14:28, everyone in China will mourn for 3 minutes, during which all activity will stop, and the cars,trains,ships and air raid alarm will sound.

Oh, there was another piece of information regarding the appearance of Earthquake clouds. Apparently, there are appearances of strange clouds before earthquakes. They are long, like the trails airplanes leave behind, just that thicker and of different colors at the same time (orange, white, grey). Also, the intersection or start of the clouds appear to the epicenter of the quake.

Nevertheless, googling for info on these clouds have came up with the "Hot Air Paradox" which declaims the earthquake cloud theory. I don't quite know what it really is about, no time to read. I might update more about this next time though. If you're interested just google "earthquake clouds".

The JC2 Block Test is drawing near. In order to provide a conducive room for your BT preparation, the opening hours of the Reading Room will be as follow (wef tomorrow):

Mon to Friday : 2 pm to 9 pm
Sat : 8 am to 6 pm
March vacation : 8 am to 6 pm (Mon -Sat)

Please take note that you need to be in school uniform or half uniform(with school T-shirt) in order to be allowed to use the Reading Room. We also need your cooperation in ensuring that
1. no food and drink are allowed in the room (except for water bottles). Food should be consumed in the canteen.
2. remain silent in the room (that's what you want)
3. switch off all lights and air con when you are the last to leave the room.

You are advise from taking part in any "flagpole-ing" game. This is
a game which involve a bunch of students getting hold of a boy ad
ramming him against the flagpole with his legs wide open. As a
result, the victim may sustain serious injuries. Furthermore, as we
have many visitors in Hwa Chong, it is also a very unpleasant sight
for them.
We are taking a very serious stand in this and any students caught

And the bbq pit and skewers are brand new and they've never been used before! I heard if the grilles/skewers are new must burn them first or sth to avoid um. metal poisoning? Anyone knows if it's true? :S

Those who can help bring the stuff mentioned above or got any other ideas/suggestions please tell me! Thanks. :D

Lastly, everyone please bring extra clothes in case you "fall" into the pool! XD
